Mio Ishikawa (she/her) is a Japanese performer, choreographer, and creative collaborator based in New York City. Her work lives at the intersection of contemporary dance, visual art, and immersive theatre.
A graduate of the Juilliard School (BFA 2019), Ishikawa had the opportunity to perform works by Roy Assaf, Twlya Tharp and Alejandron Cerrudo. As a freelance performer, she has performed several roles in Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More, including Lady Macbeth, and Life and Trust, a large-scale immersive production. Since 2022, she has danced with Sidra Bell Dance New York, through which she has led choreographic workshops at NYU and Harvard. Ishikawa has worked with a wide range of renowned choreographers across stage and screen productions, including Kyle Abraham, Ivan Perez, Bobbi Jene Smith, Or Schraiber, Michelle Dorrance, Celia Rowlson-Hall, Kelly Bartnik, Stefanie Batten Bland, and Amy J. Gardner.
As a choreographer, Ishikawa explores the body in states of tension, how ritual and memory shape physical expression, and the relationship between movement and the urban landscape. She is a 2023-2025 recipient of the Center for Ballet and the Arts-Juilliard fellowship for emerging choreographers, and her choreography has been presented at High Line Nine Gallery in Chelsea, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and New World Symphony in Miami.
In addition to developing her own work, Ishikawa regularly collaborates on projects across artistic mediums. She is the Associate Director of dance company BODYSONNET (2019-), where she produces dance works that center the local community and surrounding ecosystem. Ishikawa also recently co-founded Fabulosa!, a digital platform for creating and sharing site-sympathetic dance films.
